The journey of the Gene Potts Memorial Steak Cookoff began with a profound sense of camaraderie, honoring the memory of a beloved individual who brought people together like no other. On August 15, 2020, a day that would forever mark the inaugural event, we embarked on an adventure that celebrated life, friendship, and the joy of cooking steaks.
The setting for this meaningful occasion was in Liberty, Texas, at the Pecan Meadow Event Center. It was a sunlit day, the warmth of the sun reflecting the warmth of the memories we cherished of Geno.
The event wasn’t just about cooking steaks; it was about coming together to commemorate Geno’s life and the impact he had on all of us. His spirit of unity and connection was the driving force behind this event, bringing friends from various walks of life together to celebrate his enduring legacy.
Under the Texas sun, participants eagerly competed for the trophies at the 1st Annual Cookoff. The prospect of claiming a trophy wasn’t just about the accolade; it was a testament to the spirit of competition that Geno had embraced throughout his life. This Cookoff wasn’t merely a culinary contest; it was an embodiment of his zest for life and his ability to inspire people to pursue their passions.

August 15, 2020, was not just an ordinary day; it was a day of remembrance, connection, and the start of an enduring tradition. The Gene Potts Memorial Steak Cookoff was born out of friendship and the desire to pay homage to a remarkable individual. With each sizzling steak and each shared moment, we continue to honor Geno’s memory, keeping his spirit alive in every cookoff, every trophy, and every celebration of life.
The Cookoff is what Geno wanted us to continue and now the Cookoff proceeds go towards our nonprofit Gene Potts Memorial. The goal of this mission is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caregivers, and to help them feel supported and empowered as they navigate the challenges of treatment.
